Phase III; Reprogramming

Programming the project - modeling

With inspiration from the existing building and the visited buildings in Berlin and a study case from phase I, I will be working with the two acts of transformation; infiltrating and intertwining.
I have been inspirited from the very strict organization of the existing building complex and want to work with this as the base for my development for a place for Berlin University of Arts.
I will be working with a very strict and homogenous grid as a base then develop different spaces by applying walls and customize it due to the different need of activities within the building.
This is an inspiration both from Redbull Music Acadamy having these very diverse and independent rooms within one building and also an inspiration from Neues National Galerie where the structure was very strict and change-able and diverse application was made.  And at last Berlin Holocaust Memorial also as an inspiration to the base of a grid but also how you can create very diverse room/spaces in between and go from having open/public spaces to more closed/private rooms etc.

Phase I; Study Case - Las Palmas Parasite



4th. semester project; Transformation

Site: Prora - building complex

Four different acts of transformation; 
Infiltrating (;From INFILTRATE: enter or gain access to (an organization, place, etc.) surreptitiously and gradually (of a liquid) permeate (something) by filtration).
Intertwining(;From INTERTWINE: to join or become joined, to be or become very closely involved with each other)
Parasiting (;an organism that lives  in or on another organism (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the host's expense)
Masking (;From MASK: to cover or hide something so that it cannot be clearly seen)


Brief:
The Berlin University of Arts have decided to expand its activities to Prora and inhabit part(-s) of the Prora Complex including having these facilities; 
A housing unit and work space for 12 artists 
Common spaces (such as a small library, 2 seminar rooms etc. – with publicly open or
partly open access)
In- and outdoor exhibition/performance spaces
Storage (materials, workshop(-s) and exhibition)
Potential connections to the exhibition spaces, research centre and archive of the ProraZentrum

Time-scripting; outside/inside Aros

Two weeks theory course; Trying to capture time at our site and make a work which can explain something about the space. We were working with the traffic outside Aros and the movement inside Aros and try to connect these two spaces - how different time is experiences whether you are walking outside and just is transporting yourself from one place to another or when you are at a museum and are dwelling and staying in the same place for a longer amount of time. We both tried to capture this by diagrams and as our main work a film from outside and inside of Aros comparing these two different experiences.

Regenerative Architecture

Three weeks course by 3XN - introduction to regenerative architecture; cradle to cradle, up cycling etc.

Learning about this way of thinking sustainability into a building focusing on four different areas: Material Metabolism; how can be make sure that the materials used in the building is sustainable and are able to be reused again and again without loosing the quality.
Urban Biodiversity: how can we include biodiversity into a building to affect the environment positive.
Water Purification; how can we get the best out of our resources and minimize our consumption such as reusing the water for toilet flush or having a living machine with sort of plants which can cleanse the water.
Clean Energy: How can we minimize the consumption of energy and make sure that our building at a certain point will produce more energy than it use gained by renewable energy sources.



Here is a short text about cradle to cradle and other underlying terms and three examples of sustainable buildings and how they have made sustainable solutions categorized in the above-mentioned areas

Phase 4

Foci 1: Create balance between dynamic >< static structure 

Frame the dynamic parts and thereby be able to control the extent of how the structure can move.

Investigation: Make metal frames with suspended 'fabric with props' attached in various points - investigation of how it behaves differently depending on the number and placement of the attachment points.



Foci 2: The shape and scale of the elements (props)

Try different kind of shapes: triangle, hexagon, asymmetric rhombus(the element we have used so far) and symmetric rhombus - in two different scales

Investigation: Pieces of fabric with the different kind of shapes and scales (8 variations) suspended in the metal frames




All of the 8 variations suspended in all of the ten different configuration of point attachments exposed to wind from three different angles.

Location: Placed with the back of the structure to East-south-east and open up to West - make lee for the wind  in the closed space of the structure

Anchorage points: 
The open part of the structure should be attached with a wire in two asymmetric points to a wire which are shaped in a circular shape connected by three poles so it is able to slide and be tranformed and the wire to the fabric should be longer than the distance from the fabric to the poles so it also is able to move upwards and downwards.
The space of refuge: The anchorage points should be poles from which the structure is connected with wires which makes it possible for the structure to move and be affected by wind but still be in the same general position. 
And to make lee we will add more fabric so it will go to the ground and in the middle also attach the structure further with wires to the ground





The structure of the material for of the space of refuge - manipulation(exstra props):The structure of the material should be scaffold with lists and should go down to this tip in the corner of the space. 

And thereby create this more dictated form which should be a triangular shape with a flat “roof”






The apperance of the structure: The material of the structure should be fabric with white opaque full gloss plastic rhombus-elements.

There should be openings in a part of the structure in the opposite end of the structure than the space of refuge.
The openings should open inwards to make it possible to see reflections of the outside and reflections of the light inside and make the structure  outside homogenous.
